HOW TO STOP NAIL BITING IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS
A SAFE, EASY AND EFFECTIVE WAY TO PUT AN END TO THE FRUSTRATION WITH NAIL BITING
Since your son or daughter bites their nails (or even yourself) it’s frustrating. You are not suffering or worrying alone. The age group from 6 or 7 years old to mid 20’s has the highest percentage of nail biters with an even higher number in teenagers. So there are a lot of kids and parents with the same problem as you have. There is endless medical research and prognosis on nail biting with certain articles delving deep into psychological and physiological explanations. It’s called onychophagia, a negative behavior pattern with oral compulsion - a long name and explanation.
I just call it a bad habit – But a habit that can be fixed.
YOU can put an end to it with NO scolding, punishments, time outs or making them feel guilty or self conscious.
The negative health effects of nail biting
Imagine what kids touch in a day while occasionally or worse constantly putting their fingers in their mouths. Sure everybody puts their fingernails to their mouths but when biting is involved, all the dirt, grime and germs embedded in the fingernails gets sucked into the mouth and swallowed. Fingers may look clean but shine a bright flashlight under your kid’s fingernails and see what stuff is there. Check your child’s toenails – yes toenails. Are they bitten? A real health exposure. How many times have you heard Mom, Dad I’ve got a sore tummy?
Nail biting is a learned habit which becomes worse over time. From the first “pleasing feeling” of teeth biting through a nail getting progressively worse over time right up to ripping nails right back to the raw flesh sometimes drawing blood. And in some cases biting the skin when there are no nails left. Then some even start on the toenails.
When I was a kid, after running out of fingernails and skin to bite or rip off or they just got too sore to bite anymore. The obsession led me to start biting my toenails. I bit my fingernails well into my twenties, I hated it. I always felt embarrassed and ashamed – always hiding my nails. Probably not much different from your son or daughter.
If you are reading this, you are still searching for a solution. It’s upsetting for you to see your child’s nails bitten to the quick, red, raw, and inflamed or even worse – infected, let alone the embarrassment and low self esteem they feel. Ever watched them trying to pick a penny off of the table? Anxiety leads to biting – biting leads to anxiety. Chipped teeth, scratched gums resulting in infection are also a concern. Where do they spit the bitten off pieces?
What’s been tried
My parents and I’m sure you as well tried a few things: scolding, band-aids, money rewards and even gloves (gloves come off real easy). Of course there is the “standard” bad tasting nail liquid or cream. It seems that the nail liquid is the most used product for the problem. Some liquids have a little brush which is perfect for spattering into your eyes. Or you forget that you have it on your finger tips then eyes are rubbed. It stings - I know.
The worst problem with the bad tasting potion is that it does not stop the compulsion to bite. Even with the liquid, the biting continues making the child feel bad but now there is vile taste associated with it, so now they are doing two things that they hate. Not great for self esteem or confidence.
In addition to the liquids / creams, the more modern solutions from the internet range from somebody on YouTube saying “don’t bite your nails” to teeth guards. Teeth guards cost up to $600 but come out of the mouth no problem at all. There is a whole lot of lets say unusual ideas, I won’t go into them, you have probably seen them yourself. There of course the hypnosis CD’s and MP3’s.
More on hypnosis
Hypnosis clinics and operators do a good job stopping the nail biting habit. But being trained (they had better be) therapists, the price tag is high plus what I can’t understand is that return visits are sometimes required increasing the cost. As for the hypnosis CD’s and MP3’s I have a concern with this approach. A speech audio recording can and will put you in a hypnotic state, a state totally open and receptive to suggestion. The problem is that there is no trained person “the operator” present to control the depth and direction of your (the subject) sub-conscious that is reached. The recording only aims at the habit and there are no controls over external influences or the mindset of the subject (you) - a possible risk of exacerbating existing troubles or even a possibility of creating new problems. Plus, the coming up and “snapping out” has to be exactly right and re-done if it is not. An audio cannot tell if anything is not right when it finishes. I have seen websites selling bundles of several CD’s along with books and manuals (cost increase? One even included nail liquid which I thought was strange. Out of curiosity, a while back I spent a dollar and downloaded a “stop nail biting” MP3. It was some guy telling me for 10 minutes that nail biting is bad.
How I stopped
One day when in my late twenties, I was with a group of people and the subject of nail biting came up. One gifted individual asked the group, how many of you want to quit biting. Adding that it won’t take long and it is quite easy. I had nothing to loose and had basically given up after trying everything. He put me (and another) through a technique which I thought was a bit unusual – I was a bit skeptical but it was still fun. It did not take long at all and when finished, I was totally astonished. I couldn’t even try to nail bite. My compulsive craving to bite nails and skin after years and years was gone. Gone forever! I was so happy and proud. I felt fantastic! I was given the technique in text form. This is printed text is from well before the internet or even bulletin boards. I’m just trying to get the point across that this procedure is not some crazy idea from a web forum or a wed hype sales page.
Over the years I got used to my nails, cutting, clipping and filing. It became normal and I didn’t give it much thought or dwell on it. Still, every so often I see certain friends or their kids with badly bitten nails. I don’t push the subject but I watch their actions and mannerisms. My observations make me either not ask or just go ahead and ask them. “Hey want to quite biting your nails?” Usually the answer is yes. So I pull them aside for a bit and talk them through it. They are amazed at the outcome! Or I give the parent the printed text for use later to do it by themselves to talk their child though it or even use it on themselves. The “thanks so much” phone calls a few days later are great. Some were so enthusiastic about it and told me to put it on the internet. So here I am.
The text
The procedure is not a secret but it is not widely known. It is based on original text dated well before the internet. I had to take the printed sheets and type them as a digital text document. MS Word was science fiction back when they were initially printed. It was originally intended for adults but, when working on it, I thought, since most nail biters are children, why not “aim it” at them. I copied the adult portion word for word but I also included an additional step by step procedure to make it even easier for moms or dads to guide their child through the process. I recommend the procedure for children for ages 5 years and up.
The procedure
The original text is unique, perfectly composed and is completely safe. As I said it well predates the internet. It may look a bit confusing at first but if you read it a couple of times you’ll get the grasp of the concept and your good to go. Even the step by step procedure can be refined by using some of your own words that your child can best relate to. You will have to practice it a few times to become confidant with it and you can “deliver” it in a comfortable way. Yes some work is involved but memorizing is not required. Just get an understanding of it. Print off the sheets and you can write notes or some of your own words onto it. It is timed to take only a short while (practice it before you do it). Yes I have taken into account a youngsters attention span). A bit of enthusiasm and special tones in your voice will also help. Actually kids have fun with it.
Testimonials? None - but.
I’d like to mention this. A while ago I put some of this information on a parenting forum. A woman emailed me criticizing my grammar and told me that she would not spend $10 for some gimmick and her daughter is to headstrong for it to work anyway. What a shame. I feel so sorry for this woman and her daughter and possibly her other children. Obviously the daughter bites her nails and the mother seems to think the child knows best and accepts it. What else will the girl “know best” about and nothing will be done to control it by the parent? That email effected me to the point that I sent her a copy of the procedure. The reply (not exact words but close). “Thanks for sending the info – it looks pretty good but it probably won’t work on my kids. Thanks anyway”. She said kidS. The reply made me feel even worse. I just gave this mother and likely father the knowledge, know-how and step by step process to get their children to stop biting their nails. I can’t help but wonder what other things probably won’t work for their kids.
Guarantee
The technique is not a gimmick or some wacky idea taken off the net. The process is infallible and is proven completely effective and successful. If you are coaching your child through it and you mess up, no problem. Start again or practice a bit more and try again at a later time. A little work and it will all be worth it. (If you have practiced it will usually work the first time). If you have given it an honest effort and for some reason it does not work. Let me know and I’ll guide you along with it. If that does not work I will refund your money. Actually, that’s a pretty safe bet for me – it always works!
A slight example
You are on a beach, the sand is cold and wet, waves are pounding on the shore, the wind is strong and the rain so hard it stings your flesh. You’re shivering, freezing, soaked and miserable. Close your eyes for 10 seconds and be there.
How do you feel?
The beach sand is white and warm, waves gently roll in and out, a slight breeze cools you, the sky is blue and the sun warms you. You’re warm, relaxed and feel good. Close your eyes for 10 seconds and be there.
How do you feel?
This is just an example of what your mind does every split second. It is not mind control or hypnosis. It’s natural!
Blue elephant wearing cowboy boots – gotcha! You didn’t even close your eyes did you? Of course the written procedure is far more in depth than this and it precisely targets the nail biting habit.
A quick recap
The point that I am making is that the careful composition of certain and exact words written or spoken does have an effect on us. The original text is precisely that, perfectly composed and the procedure for children has been changed only slightly. But what I have included is the process step by step, sentence by sentence so it could not be easier for you. You’ll need some uninterrupted time in a quiet comfortable place and your child in a receptive mood. Get them prepared. Hey Johnny - Sally want to do something fun? It will be great for your fingers and nails. All you have to do is sit and listen to a bit of a story and play a game for a little while - or words to that effect adjusting them age appropriate.
The techniques are only $10 for both kids and adults. If you spend money on something you will probably use it. I gave it to that woman for free, it was not used and I bet her kids nails hurt. It is perfectly safe, tried, true and totally effective method to put an end to nail biting - children and adults alike. Spend ten bucks and stop nail biting for yourself, your kids, nieces, nephews, grandkids.

In a few weeks you’ll have to start clipping and filing nails. The boys hate it but the girls love it.
